You Are Here

Live Art Programme for the Liverpool Biennial 2002
18 - 21 September 2002

You Are Here has been developed by Bluecoat Arts Centre in collaboration with the Live Art Development Agency.

You Are Here is a specially commissioned programme of Live Art for the Liverpool Biennial 2002 that looks at the complexities of contemporary identities and asks whether Internationalism is a geographical or a cultural concept.

It has been conceived as a dialogue between the selected works and Guillermo Gómez-Peña's Ex-Centris project in the Biennial's International Exhibition.

Over four intensive days of challenging and engaging work, a diverse range of British based, 'international' artists working with live and time based practices contemplate, contest and critique ideas of cultural difference, displacement and hybridity. Considering questions of where 'here' is right now, the programme takes in studio based performances, installations, public interventions and one to one audience-artist encounters.

You Are Here highlights Live Art as an essential and exciting arena for artists and audiences alike. With its flexibility of form, irreverence for convention and ability to move fluidly across genres, spaces and ideas, Live Art is ideally equipped to respond to the complexity and hybridity of our modern experiences and expectations.

Growing out of Performance Art in the 60s and 70s and the impact of artists working at the edges of theatre, dance, film, video and political activism throughout the 80s and 90s, Live Art in the 21st century embraces a wide range of performative practices. It signifies new artistic approaches and cultural sites rooted in the real and grounded in ideas of presence and immediacy. From intimacy and complicity to confrontation, it can offer audiences direct, unmediated encounters that destroy pretence, create sensory immersion and open up different kinds of engagement with meaning.

In its challenge to the politics of artistic process and practice, Live Art is a potent form that disrupts the nature of contemporary art, defying expectations of who is making art, how they are making it and who they are making it for. More significantly, for many artists and audiences in Britain, Live Art has become a powerful site to break apart traditions of representation and express new identities beyond the old distinctions of nationality, ethnicity, gender and sexuality. These issues and more are reflected in You Are Here. The programme of live work is complemented by screenings and talks, including an unmissable presentation by Guillermo Gómez-Peña on the critical role of Live Art in the 21st century.

You Are Here invites you to be there. Prepare to be provoked, unsettled and entertained.
