Announcing the launch of Performance Matters

Performance Matters is a three-year creative research project bringing together artists, curators and academics to investigate the challenges that contemporary performance presents to ideas of cultural value. Performance Matters is an unprecedented collaboration between the Department of Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, the Theatre, Drama and Performance Department at Roehampton University and the Live Art Development Agency.

Daytime events from 12.00 – 16.00 on 30 April:

The Performance Matters launch day begins with a Performance Laboratory showing experimental durational and scheduled performances by some of the PhD researchers associated with the project at Goldsmiths and Roehampton. The day will feature responses and discussions with invited thinkers around issues of duration, transmission, materiality and process.

The Performance Laboratory will include works by Annalaura Alifuoco & Lis Austin, Augusto Corrieri & Owen Parry, Danae Theodoridou (with Karen Christopher), Ella Jean Finer, Fabrizio Manco, Gigi Argyropoulou & Lisa Alexander, João Florêncio, Jungmin Song, Mathias Danbolt & R Justin Hunt, Pavlos Kountouriotis & Sarah Louise Spies, Oriana Fox & Vikki Chalklin, and Eeva-Mari Haikala.

All are welcome to attend and no booking is required.

Please note that some Performance Laboratory presentations will take place in the Club Row roof space which is only accessible by stairs.

Evening events from 19.00 to 22.00 on 30 April:

The Performance Matters launch evening will feature:

  • An in-conversation between artist Walid Raad and theorist Irit Rogoff.
  • A drinks reception and speeches by Pat Loughrey, Goldsmiths Warden and Paul O’Prey, Vice-Chancellor Roehampton University.
  • Presentations by the project organisers Gavin Butt of Goldsmiths, Adrian Heathfield of Roehampton University, and Lois Keidan of the Live Art Development Agency.
  • Announcements of forthcoming Performance Matters programmes and events.
