[POSTPONED] On Magic: LADA Screens and Study Room Guide Launch

UPDATE: LADA regrets to announce that this event has been postponed along with all events until the beginning of May, at the earliest. Our office and Study Room will also remain closed for the same period. Please check for updates and more info via our COVID-19 statement here. We are also gathering information and resources to support artists and arts workers hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please join us for a magical double bill – a screening of Tim Bromage’s new film The Lord of Misrule and the launch of Tom Cassani’s LADA Study Room Guide Deception, Performance Magic, Hoaxes, Pranks and Tricks.

Tim and Tom will be joined by Augusto Corrieri who will show a short DIY film, Eight hidden movements.

All three of them will also perform some magic and have a conversation about magic, deception and performance art.

LADA is taking advice from the UK government and Arts Council England on the appropriate response to the current Coronavirus outbreak. If we do need to postpone this event we will notify everyone who has booked a place at the earliest opportunity. Thank you for your understanding.

LADA Screens: The Lord of Misrule

The Lord of Misrule is new collaborative film by Tim Bromage, filmed by Roger Graham  and performed by Quentin Reynolds.  “I have long been interested in what happens when you perform the same material over and over again. How it gets into the body and carves a familiar groove. This film is both a celebration and document of this process, as we see Punch man Quentin Reynolds present a show that he has performed thousands of times. “

Following this live launch, the film will be available to view online as April and May’s LADA Screens.

Deception, Performance Magic, Hoaxes, Pranks and Tricks: A Study Room Guide

Deception, Performance Magic, Hoaxes, Pranks and Tricks is a new Study Room Guide, drawing together resources that inform the sometimes disparate and eclectic field of deception and performance. Tom Cassani collated these resources in response to his research and reflections on the themes of Deception, Performance Magic, Hoaxes, Pranks and Tricks. The Guide also contains an accompanying essay which aims to expand the discourse around deception and magic in performance with reference to a curated selection of significant works and artists presenting work that explores these themes.

Tim Bromage

Tim Bromage is an artist, performer, and writer based in Wales. His work is informed by a variety of sources including folklore, the uncanny, and stage magic. As a recipient of a Creative Wales Award he recently undertook a radical body of research into the role of the raconteur as a trickster figure and oral historian. He is an associate artist at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff.

Tom Cassani

Tom Cassani is a Performance Artist and Liar. He is interested in how he can use elements of deception, misdirection and lying in his artistic practice. He has trained in sleight of hand, misdirection and stage magic and now uses these skills to explore truth, honesty and the importance of remaining wary of those who make extraordinary claims.Tom also works as a consultant magician and dramaturg of deception and maker of impossibilities.

Augusto Corrieri

Augusto Corrieri is an artist and writer based in Brighton and London. His works for theatres and galleries have been commissioned by European art centres, including Madrid’s Casa Encendida, Vienna’s Tanzquartier, London’s Camden Arts Centre, and Brighton’s Nightingale Theatre. With a playful rigour, the performances deconstruct the apparatus of theatre, inviting spectators to reflect on questions of spectacle and ecology in the 21st century. His book, In Place of a Show: what happens inside theatres when nothing is happening (2016) is published by Bloomsbury Methuen Drama. It is available for order here. In parallel to his performance and writing practice, Augusto presents a magic show under the pseudyonym Vincent Gambini.
