To Gypsyland
with Live at LICA and Bolton Museum and Art Gallery
A workshop that explores the personal and political in performative, collaborative and socially engaged practices.
Project summary:
Drawing on their own personal working experiences as artists and how this has influenced the development of their collaboration on the touring project To Gypsyland, this workshop will encourage participants to consider issues of place identity and marginal histories within their work in a series of actions and dialogues about being artists working in practices that are performative, collaborative, and social/socially engaged. We will look at culture and cultural experience, whose culture and who is representing, considering concepts and situations that impact on culture such as the stereotyping and romanticising of others, dichotomies present in the ideas of insider/outsider and visibility/invisibility, the role of a place, site or institution, the global and the local and ideas and realities of nomadism for necessity and in the artistic imagination in the creation and framing of work and art making. We will also take participants to Bolton Museum and Art Gallery to think about how archives and museums represent diverse cultures with the opportunity to respond to their collection and create an intervention in the museum on the second day of the workshop. Beyond the workshop there may be scope for participants to contribute to theTo Gypsyland project.
