DIY 2020: Leonie Rousham and Ishwari Bhalerao – Alternative Mapping of Time and Landscape

Leonie and Ishwari will be working to explore alternative processes of mapping time and landscape, moving away from ideas of linearity and colonial legacies of demarcation. Focussing on process rather than production, they will do this using plant-based darkroom printing, fermentation and chorus interventions.

This DIY is run in partnership with Fermynwoods Contemporary Art.

About the workshop

Alternative Mapping of Time and Landscape sees Leonie Rousham and Ishwari Bhalerao invite participants to take part in experimental image making processes which focus on cycles of growth, decay and repetition.

Through a residency at Fermynwoods Contemporary Art participants will explore experimental darkroom printing and chorus interventions. Slow processes which move against neoliberal and extractivist drives towards output. Participants will explore how art can be used to aid collective sustenance and work towards an end to continued cycles of exhaustion.

Dates and location

This workshop will take place at Sudborough Green Lodge – Fermynwoods’ remote outreach base set in the Northamptonshire countryside within the largest and richest biodiversity grassland in the county, with medieval ridge and furrow ploughing. The meadow is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSi) due to the diversity of its flora species. The nearby habitat hosts rare wildlife including: the Red Kite, Hobby and Siskin birds; rare butterflies such as the Purple Emperor and White Admiral; the great-crested and smooth newt; Natterer’s Pipistrelle and Long-eared bats; as well as foxes, badgers, sheep and two species of deer.

This DIY is intended to be a two day activity including an overnight stay at Sudborough Green Lodge. With current Covid-19 restrictions this is not currently possible so we plan to recruit participating artists before the end of 2020 and to confirm a safe and practical time in dialogue with all parties.

How to apply

This residency is intended for participants who are emerging artists and interested in ideas of expanded cinema, landscape and sustainable practices. We would also like participants to have practices/thoughts/ideologies/dreams which align with trajectories of opposing unsustainable colonial legacies of art-making.

To apply please visit the online form, answering the following questions.

Short audio or video applications with the same information are also accepted and should be sent via WeTransfer to [email protected] or [email protected].

  • Tell us a bit about yourself.
  • What does sustainability mean to you? (This can be on a more personal level or beyond the common use of the word).
  • What role does process play in your life/work? What is a slow process and why might it be important?
  • Send an image that resonates with you. Explain why if you like, or let the image speak for itself.

Leonie Rousham and Ishwari Bhalerao are artists working in collaboration. They run a space called Kneed, a resource for artists and cultural workers to learn how to make collectively and sustainably, resisting the pressures of neoliberalism and constant accumulation. In their art practice they are interested in exploring alternative means of mapping time and place, opposing ideas of linearity and colonial cartographic legacies.
