ALAG: A Live Art Gala
“If you are going to hold a fundraising gala, this is how to do it.” – Mary Paterson
On Thursday October 2, 2014, LADA presented ALAG: A Live Art Gala, its first-ever fundraising event, which took place at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern in London.
MC’d by David Hoyle, with Joshua Sofaer as Auctioneer and Lucy McCormick as the Glamorous Assistant, ALAG featured performances, Live and Silent auction objects and experiences, and Tombola items donated by artists that LADA has had the pleasure of working with over the last fifteen years.
Live: Neil Bartlett, Anne Bean & Richard Wilson, Ansuman Biswas, George Chakravarthi, Marcia Farquhar, French & Mottershead, Susannah Hewlett, La Ribot, Stacy Makishi, Ursula Martinez, Lucy McCormick, Harold Offeh, Joshua Sofaer, and The Famous Lauren Barri Holstein & Martin O’Brien.
Tombola and Live & Silent Auctions of artworks and experiences: Marina Abramovic, Oreet Ashery, Ron Athey, Bobby Baker, Julia Bardsley, Stuart Brisley, Richard DeDomenici, The Disabled Avant-Garde, Tim Etchells, Sheila Ghelani, Raimund Hoghe, Jamie lewis Hadley, Brian Lobel, Amy Sharrocks, and Manuel Vason.

ALAG: documentation and response
LADA invited Mary Paterson to respond to and reflect on the ALAG experience, and in particular the relationships between Live Art and the UK’s increasing drive towards philanthropy. Download Mary’s Text.
Photographs from ALAG can be viewed above and two highlights films of the event are available to view below.
ALAG surpassed our expectations of what a Live Art auction could be – all the objects and experiences in the Silent Auction were bid for, and the Live Art Tombola was completely sold-out.
The funds raised at ALAG will be used to support LADA’s programmes, making influential artists’ development programmes like DIY possible, supporting new publications by extraordinary artists, and helping us buy essential books and DVDs for our Study Room.
ALAG was timed to celebrate LADA’s 15th Anniversary, and we are very grateful to the artists who donated their performances and auction items, and everyone who bought ALAG tickets, bid for auction items or dived into our ALAG Tombola. We hope everyone at ALAG enjoyed the experience.
The event was financially supported by Arts Council England through the Catalyst programme. A summary of LADA’s Catalyst activities can be read here.
“Go see your solicitor and make LADA the benefactor of your will.” – David Hoyle
