“where the frame breaks—the edge, the fracture—you paint, and you write. You perform, you film, and you write.” – Carolee Schneemann
Breaking the Frame is the Canadian film-maker Marielle Nitoslawska’s 2012 film about the extraordinary experimental American artist Carolee Schneemann who died on 6 March 2019. Breaking the Frame is an unusual exhilarating and insightful visual essay in film-form, the response of one artist to another.
Writer and publisher Bonnie Marranca was a close friend of Carolee Schneemann’s, recently writing that her practice was always “stretching the boundaries, making things with her hands, discovering new ways of understanding the world, loving the ecstasy of presence.” In 2010 Marranca and LADA’s Thinker in Residence Claire MacDonald interviewed Schneemann in her home in New Paltz, New York. The interview, In the Beginning is Drawing, together with What Matters, a short essay by Schneemann herself, will be published this spring in PAJ 122.
Please join us for an evening with Bonnie Marranca and Claire MacDonald who will present a rare screening of Breaking the Frame followed by a conversation about Carolee Schneemann, her work and her legacy.
