DIY: 2017 – Daniel Oliver: Max DYSPRAXE’S performance world neurodivergent revolution fun-time

We have four days to destroy and rebuild the world of performance and make it weirder and awkwarder and wonderfuler, just like you

Project summary

This is a four day workshop for performance makers who identify as neurodivergent – i.e. being dyslexic, dyspraxic, autistic, or having other learning difficulties or neurological/cognitive conditions, or experiencing yourself as someone whose way of relating to the world and other people is outside of the norm. I am dyspraxic. This DIY is also open to performance makers with an in interest in neurodiversity, or in working with neuro-diverse artists.

The aim of the project is to work together to develop new approaches to making and presenting performance that embrace our neurodivergencies. Through a series of performance exercises, discussions and other ways of sharing ideas, and some weird awkward clumsy rituals that we make up led by MAX Dyspraxe (AKA me being really dyspraxic), we will work out what does and does not work for us in the world of performance. Anything that does not work will be destroyed and we will make up new things to take their place. We will rebuild the world of performance so it is our world. Then we will put on a show for ourselves within that world. We will film it and lie about how it all happened.

The artist

I make raucous participatory performances that try to shimmy between awkwardness and euphoria. My practice is dyspraxic and so am I. I have been doing this in the UK and overseas since 2002. I also teach in the Drama Department at Queen Mary University of London, where I research neurodivergency and contemporary performance. I did a PhD about awkwardness.

If you have questions about this project, please contact Daniel.

This DIY is supported by Access All Areas Theatre.
