An acoustic investigation of the Suffolk coast for composers and sonic artists
APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.
Project summary
The Felixstowe Affair is an opportunity for composers and sonic artists to explore Live Art and performance techniques in an acoustic investigation of the Suffolk coast. Through field visits, remote tasks, research-based inquiries, and compositional prompts the selected group will produce an aural ʻsolutionʼ to a semi-fictional mystery. The mystery concerns an as-yet-undefined event, whose sonic traces we will probe. This collaborative and located approach moves us away from considering perception as individual towards an understanding of dynamic interplay between ears, eyes, mouths, feet, human and nonhuman actors, history and infrastructure, atmosphere and environment.

The artists
Johanna Linsley and Rebecca Collins began working together in 2014, with the support of DIY 11, Sound & Music and Arts Bournemouth in a workshop for performance makers exploring eavesdropping. Building on the success of this initial collaboration, Collins and Linsley continued to develop the project under the title Stolen Voices. The project has taken the form of participatory workshops, new music composition, experimental performance, community gig nights, radio broadcasts and an interactive installation we dubbed the Eavesdropbox, as well as an artist book project titled Her Figure a Song that is currently in progress for Copy Press. We have undertaken sustained investigations in Seaham (East Durham), with the support of Arts Council England, East Durham Creates and Helix Arts, and currently in Aberdeen with the support of Silver City Stories (and consortium between Aberdeen City Council, University of Aberdeen and Visit Aberdeenshire). We have presented the project at the Creative Data Club (a project of Sound & Music), Points of Listening (a project of the Centre for Research in Sound Art Practice at the London College of Communication) and on Resonance FM. The project has also been featured on BBC Radio Newcastle.
If you have questions about this project, please contact the artists.
This DIY is supported by Snape Maltings and SPILL Festival.
