DIY: 2017 – Tara Fatehi Irani: Her Eyes Under the Bridge

Performative and site-responsive experiments entangling personal stories of leaving behind and moving ahead

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.

Project summary

Her Eyes Under the Bridge explores how personal documents and performance can animate each other within a specific context of travelling and migration. This is a chance for artists to select and activate their personal documents through displacement, performance and site-responsive adventures. Whether you had to leave your town or country for another, by choice, by force or by a mixture of the two, you have gone through a physical and emotional experience. As different as each of these journeys might be, there is a common challenge of leaving behind, moving, staying and belonging. Through a series of studio-based and site-responsive activities we will explore how a sensation of the past and perception of the present can be superimposed onto one another in the process of transforming histories into actions.

Her Eyes Under the Bridge will playfully encourage putting together solo practices and stories into collective experiences that develop a sense of belonging and being together. In these two days, we will remould our experience of being displaced or re-placed into performative ventures that explore why we keep what we keep and why we let go of the rest, what remains inside us, what we recall and what we erase.

How to apply

Participants can be artists at any stage of their professional practice and from any artistic background with some experience of making work and an interest in working collaboratively and site-responsively. All participants need to have a personal experience of displacement or re-placement (this might be an experience of their own or of their family and can be at any scale or distance). Participants from all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply and bring together a variety of perspectives and personal stories.

Applications are invited via the link below, which asks for short statements on your art practice, your experience of migration, immigration and displacement, and a family photo that you will never forget. These questions can be answered as text or via a video submission, and CVs and other links can also be sent.

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.

The artist

Tara Fatehi Irani is a multidisciplinary artist and writer working with fabricated histories, mistranslated memories and unattended archives. Her work is primarily concerned with the ephemeral interactions between memories, words and sites. Her PhD research at the University of Roehampton in conjunction with the Live Art Development Agency investigates the interanimation of personal archives and performance through working with family archives from Iran. She is half of the duo /gorizazmarkaz/ and 1/6th of the Documentation Action Research Collective (DARC). www.tarafatehi.com
