Rather than attempting a general overview or history of this movement, Striding Out is a detailed examination of selected choreographers of the late 1960’s and the 1970’s, and of the institutions that supported them. As the title suggests, the seminal role of the early group, Strider, is highlighted. In addition, the work of four major choreographers whose careers began during this pioneering period – Richard Alston, Siobhan Davies, Rosemary Butcher and Ian Spink – is charted through to the present.
Striding Out is accessibly structured so that the chapters may be read in any order, the detailed notes and appendices are also a valuable source of reference.
Stephanie Jordan trained in both dance and music. she has taught both practical and theoretical aspects of dance, in Europe and in North America, and has held lectureships at Crewe and Alsager College of Higher Education, and at the University of Surrey. Currently, she is Director of Dance Studies at the Roehampton Institute. An established dance critic, she has contributed to The New Statesman, The Listener and The Independent, and is London correspondent for Ballet Review.
