East End Collaborations 2000

A week of intensive workshops and open performance platforms

Now in its second year East End Collaborations is a new initiative by Queen Mary and Westfield College in collaboration with the Live Art Development Agency, London.

East End Collaborations is an invitation to audiences to see an eclectic range of new work by new artists over four action packed days and an opportunity for younger artists to take part in performance based workshops with leading British practitioners.

desperate optimists Sampling for Performance

This workshop looks at the relationship between sound sampling and text for performance. Participants will have the opportunity to use digital audio software to explore the process of combining elements of music and sound with language and live performance as the basis for composing a short piece. desperate optimists are currently involved in a number of multi media projects including work for CD Rom, the web, film and performance.

Wednesday 31st May 14.00 – 17.00

Helena Goldwater Objectifying

Taking the premise that all material is an object (whether your own body, a handbag or a monologue) this workshop will work with texts and objects without taking them for granted as material. Helena Goldwater makes predominantly solo performances for a diversity of venues including clubs, site-specific spaces and theatres as well as writing for other people's projects.

Ernst Fischer Embodying Space: Landscaping Gender

Concerned with the relationship between architectural and physical spaces, this workshop will focus on the critical exploration of gender issues, memory and loss. Ernst Fischer s work is stylistically indebted to Butoh and Noh but 'queer' in content. He has worked with Hermann Nitsch, Franko B and Gay Sweatshop and performed in Germany, Italy, UK and Japan, The London International Mime Festival, LIFT, the ICA, in his own and other peoples' living rooms and on the streets

Friday 2nd June 14.00 – 17.00

Helen Paris/Leslie Hill Body Memory

Through an exploration of the senses, in particular the sense of smell, this workshop addresses both devising work through body memory and the potentials of engaging sensory and emotional reaction/interaction from an audience. Helen Paris and Leslie Hill are are the artistic directors of curious.com performance & multimedia company and their work has been widely commissioned and shown across the US and UK .
All workshops are £15 (£10 concessions).
There is a maximum of 15 participants per workshop so early booking is highly recommended.
